My story

I was 19 when I got the call that changed my life.

My mom was in the ICU. That call began her seven-year fight with an illness that took her life in 2013, and it began mine with money. I watched my family handle bills nobody planned for, with nobody explaining it without making us feel behind.

I was on my way to work when my dad called. My mom was in the ICU and nobody knew what was wrong. I needed to get there now. That call began her seven-year fight with an illness that took her life in 2013, and it began mine with money: watching a family handle medical bills nobody had planned for, one decision at a time, with no plan and nobody explaining it without making us feel behind.

I was at Oregon State when she got sick. After I graduated I went into banking to figure out how the system actually worked, and within a year I moved into mortgage lending. I spent 13 years there, in the top 1% of producers. On the side I volunteered with a nonprofit helping people coming out of prison learn to function in a monetary system that had never been explained to them. Same lesson, different room: the fix was almost never more information. It was someone explaining it plainly, without judgment, and handing them one step.

In 2016 Kaleb Thornhill, then with the Miami Dolphins, called and asked if I could build a program for retired players making the transition to their next career. I ran a week-long program with two former players. When it ended, he asked me to take on the Dolphins roster. I saw the need and made it happen. That is how Financial Footwork started.

In 2017 I walked into my first NFL locker room. A rookie class, a room full of young men about to earn more money in a season than most people earn in a decade, with a seven-year career to make it last. Nobody had told them the truth: the math has to math. Lifestyle has to match income. The plan for a forty-year career doesn’t work for a seven-year one. I told them. They listened, because I didn’t talk down to them and I didn’t pretend it was easy. That room became 15+ professional sports organizations over the next decade, and the directors who booked me for the first season are still booking me for the ninth.

What I’d been building in those locker rooms belonged to everyone else too: the employer whose people carry money stress into every meeting, the credit union whose members never learned to read a statement, the sales team whose income arrives in waves. Same pressure, same avoidance, same need for a game plan that holds up when life gets loud. Financial Footwork went on to serve 50+ employers, associations, and universities.

Then I noticed something. The rooms where the most changed weren’t the ones with the most content. They were the ones where I stood in front of people, asked for a show of hands, put a real number on the screen, and watched someone believe for the first time that they could handle it. So in 2018 I made the stage the whole job. Financial Footwork is still the company behind me. The keynote is the work.

What I believe

Four beliefs behind every keynote.

01

Anyone can get good with money.

Not because money is easy. Because handling it is a learnable skill, and almost nobody was taught it.

02

Money is a performance issue, never a personal failure.

People don't avoid money because they don't care. They avoid it because it feels overwhelming. Remove the shame and people lean in.

03

We learn about money backwards.

Environment shapes us first, emotions decide second, education comes last. I teach the Three E's in the order money is actually lived.

04

I'm not a financial advisor. I'm a coach.

I will never tell your people what to do with their money. I'll show them how to decide.

Financial Footwork

The company behind the stage.

Financial Footwork, Inc. is the company I started in 2016. It holds everything I've built since: the Train Your Money method, the book, the playbooks, and the keynotes, workshops, and seminars I deliver. It's the name on every contract and invoice. It doesn't sell anything on its own or put anyone else on stage. When you book Financial Footwork, you get me.

Worked with Financial Footwork before? You're in the right place. Same work, simpler front door.

The method

Train Your Money Performance Model™

Awareness
Money in plain language and in the room's own numbers.
Application
Worksheets and the Starter Playbook, so people leave with a move to make on the next check.
Accountability
A plan the room can keep score on, with follow-up for organizations that want the change to last.

Off the stage

Show up and do the reps.

We live in Boise. When I'm not on a stage or in a locker room, you'll find me at the Saturday market with my partner and our two dogs, Dragon the Shiba Inu and Auggie the Havanese, or out on our homestead, where I garden and keep an orchard. We lift three to five days a week, because I believe the same thing about money that I believe about the gym: you don't need to be perfect, you need to show up and do the reps.

If we meet at your reception, come say hello. I love hearing people's stories. It's the same thing I do on stage, just quieter.
